SEMINAR ON TUBERCULOSIS AT MUHAMMAD MEDICAL COLLEGE

A seminar on various aspects of tuberculosis was held at auditorium of Muhammad Medical College on Friday 2nd April 2010. The seminar was chaired by Professor Noor Muhammad Memon whereas Professor Syed Razi Muhammad was cochairman.

Miss Khadija Sundas presented introduction to tuberculosis. She mentioned that as much as a third of population of the world is suffering from tuberculosis. She explained various complications that can occur with reference to time period from the time of infection.

Miss Aysha Ismail gave an outline of diagnostic tests available. She explained that better understanding of plain X-Ray, tuberculin test and isolation of acid fast bacilli from the lesion, or secretion (e.g. sputum) or washings remain most important tool especially in countries like Pakistan where resources are limited.

Miss Saima Shafiq talked about late treatment of Tuberculosis. She described various lines of treatment. She also mentioned about DOTS. She also described Medical Treatment of multi drug resistant tuberculosis.

Mr. Hanifullah presented a talk on pathology of intestinal tuberculosis. He explained that ulcerative type occurs when virulence of organism is higher and resistance of host is lesser. In hyperplastic variety, reverse is true.

Mr. Hassan Nadeem talked about investigation & treatment of intestinal tuberculosis. He explained that Ba studies show ileocaecal involvement in 84% of cases.

Mr. Rashid Chaudhri talked about diagnosis and pathology of tuberculosis meningitis. He explained the wide range of symptoms including deafness, blindness, paralysis and impaired consciousness. He also discussed neck rigidity, Kerning’s & Brudzinski’s signs.

Mr. Muhammad Adil discussed various investigations required to diagnose tuberculosis meningitis. He explained that unlike some other sites, tuberculosis meningitis is early diagnosed on the basis of CSF analysis which can be sent for PCR analysis. CT-Scan is also helpful. He stressed that rarely diagnosis is necessary to prevent complications and mortality.

Mr. Sarfraz Abbas discussed the treatment of tuberculosis meningitis. He especially described the difference in treatment of tuberculous meningitis with that of more common form of tuberculosis.

Professor Razi Muhammad talked about surgical treatment of tuberculosis. He explained that nowadays surgical treatment is mostly confirmed to multidrug resistant cases.

Finally Professor Noor Muhammad Memon thanked the audience.
